Marche Breaks

Of very ancient origin, probably pre-Roman, it owes its name to its strategic position on a round-shaped bend of the river.

Erected as a defensive castle in the 10th century A. D. by the Benedictine monks of Farfa, after a brief period under the jurisdiction of Ascoli Piceno, in 1356 it is confirmed in the Egidiane Constitutions as a possession of the Farfa monks.

In 1571 it passes in the hands of the diocese of Montalto and Ripatransone.

Of very ancient origin are also its surrounding villages (Capradosso, Castel di Croce, Poggio Canoso), born around the 10th century as defensive castles of the State of Ascoli Piceno, they were autonomous until 1860. Still today, in opposition to the chief town, they belong to the diocese of Ascoli Piceno.

In the late Middle Age, the citadel of Rovetino had a strategic importance due to its position of control over the territory, some ruins of the citadel are still visible in the locality of Colle della Torre (the Hill of the Tower), in the middle of the homonymous wood.
