Monte Vidon Combatte

Monte Vidon Combatte is a small village in the Aso valley, which offers natural and panoramic beauties in an intact environment.

The village has a very peculiar name, linked to a legend of which only the main features are known. The legend narrates that the name of Monte Vidon Combatte derives from a battle episode, not very renowned, occurred in the Middle Age. Seemingly the name stems from an episode that involved a person during the Middle Ages. The ancient hamlet was fortified around the 14th century and was transformed in a castle.

The village still preserves its medieval appearance, thanks to the remains of its walls, whose outline is still visible.

The walls date back to the 14th and 15th centuries, which are penetrable through a 15th century double barrel vault, they open towards a typical door that leads to the historic centre. Visitors may admire an enchanting hamlet.

A village whose background is a splendid natural landscape; it provides tourists with a leap into the past. The town features also suggestive urban parks and pleasant panoramic views, all of them placed in a still integral environment, from the Gran Sasso Mount to the sea.

The village is immersed in a peaceful and charming location, witnessed by its small streets, alleys and medieval remains.

The most interesting religious monument is in the small hamlet called San Procolo, where the church San Procolo is situated. Inside the church visitors may admire 15th-century frescoes of Umbria and Marches schools, the apse conserves frescoes of the same period, of Crivelli’s school. It is worth admiring the small tablets of a polyptych by Martino Angeli, dating back to 1443.

Monte Vidon Combatte is also the home town of Aurelio Rossi (1898-1942), heroic commander of the First World War, explorer in Africa and famous writer.
