Montegiorgio’s beautiful historic centre has managed to keep its charming medieval features.
Montegiorgio was founded in the place where Neolithic populations and Piceni lived. The small town is situated on a hill halfway between the
Montegiorgio was founded by Benedictine monks, the first inhabitants gathered around their convent, which was initially annexed to the Gothic-Romanesque church Santa Maria Grande, now dedicated to Saint Francis.
The historic centre developed from that small centre, and now boasts beautiful and elegant buildings, such as the one called Alaleona and is embellished by numerous churches, excellent examples of various architectural styles.
The church San Giovanni has a beautiful Neoclassical portal, the Baroque church San Michele is enriched by remarkable stucco decorations, the Neoclassical church Sant’Andrea has a splendid altarpiece by Francescuccio Ghissi, finally churches San Giacomo and Santa Maria della Luna are now closed but both deserve mentioning for their beautiful portals.

The many hamlets in the
Montegiorgio projects itself towards the future, yet it established the Centre of Rural Culture of the Upper Piceno Area, to preserves the rich rural heritage and its innumerable traditions. The Centre hosts tools and objects of daily use, each of which tell a story and emanates the unique warmth of the simple and precious activities of the past.
