Montefalcone Appennino

On vertiginous stone wall, the church of St Pietro in Penne shows its elegant gothic facade and Romanesque belfry.

Behind it, from belvedere, you can enjoy one of the most attractive views of the Marches, onto green hilly crowned valley of the Also and the profiles of Monte dell’Ascensione, of Gran Sasso and of the Sibillini, solemnly dominating the wide horizon.

White houses with porticoed courtyards of Montefalcone will fascinate you, as well as, nearer to the valley, Foro: 47 metres long tunnel made with the point of chisel in the first half of the 19th century.

Above the tunnel, there is the 16th century church of Madonna delle Scalette.

At small distance, from the garden of the Palace Felici (housing the Museum of Alemanno, the Museum of Palaeontology and the Environmental Education Centre), a path leads along the walls of the grey sandstone cliff.

The church of St John, annexed to the Convent of Zoccolanti in fraction Luogo di Sasso with interesting 15th century cloister, preserves a valuable polyptych of Pietro Alemanno.

While tasting typical dishes you will recognise the love-based attention belonging to old times: apparently inaccessible Montefalcone Appennino engaged hard in preserving its own rich gastronomy.
