Hotels - Hotels in the Marche, as in the rest of Italy, are graded by stars. One and two star hotels are basic but cheap. Three star hotels are good all-rounders without too many frills; prices vary significantly depending on location and season. Four star places have every comfort you would expect at a higher price. Five star world-class hotels are thin on the ground outside Italy's bigger cities.
Farm Stay or Agriturismo - You might be looking for a stay down on the farm. The Marche is in the forefront of agriturismo, the scheme to allow farmers to offer rooms, meals, apartments and villas. Go to our holidays on the farm page for more information and useful links. Or, as mentioned above, try the Marche Region accommodation database and look under the heading "farm houses".
Country House or Farm House - A word here on the categories used by Italian tourist authorities to classify tourist accommodation - titles such as "agriturismo" or " farm houses" describe any of the many types of accommodation offered on farms. Terms such as "country house" ,"house or apartment for holidays" and "residences" can all mean a villa or apartment for rent, the only difference often being a question of bureaucratic classification.
House Rental or Villa Rental - Another possibility might be to rent a villa or apartment either through searching on the web, newspaper classified advertisements or through one of the many holiday rental agencies that specialise in Italy. The classification "landlords/landladies" is used to describe bedrooms for rent - ie. bed without the breakfast.
Bed & Breakfast - Bed & breakfast, usually a few rooms (max 6)in a private house, it can also cover small apartments in country properties. The Marche Region has recently launched new laws aimed at encouraging private homeowners to offer bed & breakfast and B&B signs are mushrooming. If you are touring by car this may be the best option. In peak months, they will often be already booked in advance. If you are looking for this type of accommodation, it's worth asking at the local bar - the word camera or simply "bed and breakfast" should get the message across.
Camping - Down by the coast campsites abound. They are usually well equipped with shops, shady trees and beach-front locations. They do, however, charge higher prices in August, and are usually only open from late April through to the end of September. Inland, on the other hand, campsites are thinner on the ground and tend to have more basic facilities. But prices are lower and it's a good way to meet holiday-making Italian families. Many towns are also setting aside areas where motorised camper vans can park for the night.
