Maltignano

The name Maltignano testifies the ancient origin of this village founded by the roman duumvir Publio Maltino Basso that controlled this territory around 80  B.C.

The same denomination was maintained by Carlo Magno, arrived in Italy in the 9th century, who successively consigned Ager Maltineanus to the canonical Capitolo of the church of Ascoli.

Located at short distance from the Adriatic sea and near the border to Abruzzo (since 1847 as reported in a document which stated the boundaries), Maltignano stretches between the side of Tronto river and the overhanging hill.

It has been fortified around the 11th century with a castle of pentagonal plant to protect the population and, in the further centuries, many houses have been built around Piazza del Mercato.

In spite of, it is today an industrious an modern town, Maltignano shows its glorious vestiges with two elegant palaces built in the late Renaissance  (Rosati’s palace and Carpani’s) which give to the historical centre a great value.

And to Renaissance is inspired the suggestive historical recalling called “Palio delle Contrade”,  that takes place every year on May, where Maltignano discovers again its rich past.

In fact all districts, engaged in cheerful competitions, have special names to recollect the wide woods and even the poor houses in clay where metayers used to rest from labours.

The main square (entitled to Giovanni di Vittoria) opens to Certosa street, so called for its ancient parish church where Saints and pilgrims used to go.

Not too far, rises the church of “Madonna della Benedizione” celebrated with a populated procession every spring.

In the church of “Madonna delle Grazie” citizens meet to be present at the main religious celebrations.
