Comunanza

Protected by the woody slopes of Mounts Civitella and Baiardo, Comunanza seems to be observing from a bank of the Aso river the remains of its past, materialized on the opposite bank in a group of high houses that make the ancient town centre.

Comunanza has ancient origins that are testified by archaeological findings dating back to the Neolithic era. Other examples are the Roman baths of Colle Terme, close to the beautiful Romanesque church of Santa Maria a Terme.

Many famous painters were born here, such as the Ghezzis - Sebastiano (1590-1650), Giuseppe (1634-1721) and his son Pier Leone, and Antonio Amorosi (1660-1740), whose works may be admired inside the churches and in the town’s Diocesan Museum.

Such a generous nature as for landscapes and colours could not but inspire the works by many artists; the small town preserves precious architectural examples, such as the Baroque church of Santa Caterina, enriched by many stuccoes and flanked by a Romanesque-style belfry that ends in an octagonal cusp.

Another example is the nearby church Sant’Anna, completed by a beautiful portico and marked by an interesting 18th-century interior.

Upriver from the village (and perfectly integrated in the environment) is the artificial basin called lake Gerosa, where many sports fishing and nautical sports enthusiasts often go.The ancient rural hamlet Pian d'Abete, facing the lake, has been recently restored and is now used as a splendid hotel.

Today Comunanza represents a significant industrial centre, but is also the ideal starting point for excursions to the Sibillini Mounts.

The Community of Sibillini Mounts chose this village as its headquarter. Every year, on the 26th December, the streets of Comunanza streets turn into a charming living crib, which attracts many visitors.
