Castorano

Castorano was of very ancient origin but it was rebuilt in XVI century but it was rebuilt in XVI century. It keeps an astylar cross in embossed silver with sections used to keep the relics of saints, a XVI century work of Le Marche.

The area has been inhabited since the prehistoric period as testified by Piceni and Roman archaeological finds. Its history is connected to Ascoli’s one.

A document states that in 1283 the Castrum Castrurarum, subject to Prince Rainaldo da Monsampolo at the time, was sold to Ascoli for a considerable sum.

Castorano was a second rank castle: it stood guard over the fertile valley of Tronto and overall controlled Offida, allied with Fermo.

In XV century its task of defending the borders of the state of Ascoli became less remarkable. The Book of Communal Statutes of 1612, still available in the archives of the Commune, presents in its cover the stylised drawing of the castle. It is very realistic: in fact, the top of the polygonal tower, dating back to XV century, was rebuilt and fit to belfry for S. Maria della Visitazione’s Church.
